Ad strength is Google measure of how well your ads are expected to perform relative to what Google considers best practices. A poor rating does affect your impression share but the relationship is not always what Google implies.

You are not alone in this.

You wrote your ads and Google immediately gave them a Poor or Needs Improvement strength rating. You are told to add more headlines, add more descriptions, and make them more varied. You wonder whether this matters for your actual results or whether it is just Google pushing you toward more complex ads.

Here is what is actually going on.

Ad strength is based on the combination of headlines and descriptions you provide and how unique and varied they are. Google uses responsive search ads that mix and match your headlines and descriptions in different combinations. More unique headlines give Google more combinations to test, which it considers better. However high ad strength does not always correlate with higher conversion rates. A highly specific, tightly written ad with limited variation can outperform a broadly varied one with higher ad strength.

The thing most people miss.

Ad strength measures Google preference for variety. Conversion rate measures what actually happens when a real customer sees your ad. These two metrics sometimes align and sometimes do not.

The fix that actually works.

Aim for at least Excellent ad strength on your most important ads by providing 15 unique headlines and 4 unique descriptions, each with different angles on your key selling points. This gives Google the variation it needs while maintaining the core message you want to communicate. Monitor actual CTR and conversion rate alongside ad strength because ad strength is a leading indicator not a guarantee of performance.

What this looks like when it works.

Write ads that are specific to your service, your location, and your key differentiators. A highly relevant tight ad consistently outperforms a generic broadly varied one regardless of its strength rating.
